Have you ever asked yourself:

Why don't I lost any weight when I change what I eat?

I dramatically change my eating habits but never see any results, what’s the deal?

Will my dreaded muffin top ever go away?

I’m here to suggest something radical. It’s not what you eat that makes the biggest difference, instead it’s habits and your lifestyle choices that reside off your plate, that influence you the most! Since this is a fast departure from what mainstream culture and media will share with you, I want to take a moment to dig in and provide clarity around the concept of Primary versus Secondary food. In this blog you’ll gain a solid understanding of each type of nourishment, and a greater knowledge of the interconnectedness of these two types of food on our overall health.

Let’s dig into Secondary food first. We’re all educated, high-achieving women here, so this will come intuitively. Secondary food is the nourishment your body receives by the food you ingest. Any food or beverages you put into your body are considered Secondary food. Obviously this is the component of nutrition we’re most familiar with.

Now, let’s dig into the interesting one, Primary food! Any guesses what this refers to? Primary foods are all the intangible ways you feed your body; meaning the relationships you’re a part of, your spiritual practices, career and physical activity. Each of these components has a huge impact on our overall health and wellbeing. While these areas of our life may not be the first to come to mind if we’re thinking of making a change in our overall health, I’m here to suggest they are crucial. Primary food has a huge influence on our ability to live our best life.

So often when people think of their health goals it has to do with the questions I posed at the start. It has a basis in improved aesthetics, whether that’s losing weight, being stronger & more fit, or simply feeling better in our clothes. Our culture has ingrained in us that if we want to see a physical change we have to modify what we eat. The concept of calories in and calories out, we having to take in less than we burn, and we’ll reach our goals - right?

Here’s my question to you…What if we challenged the norm? What would happen if you focused on Primary food first (the nourishment that lies off our plate first) and what you’re eating on your plate secondarily?

How does this make you feel? Does the concept make you squirmy and uneasy? Does it feel comforting to know there are powerful influences that lie off your plate? Does it seem hard to believe? These are big questions, and that’s the reason I’m devoting January’s blogs to a deep dive on Primary and Secondary food. Helping you understand the concepts and learn how to apply them in your daily life. Stay tuned there are powerful blog posts coming your way, that you won’t want to miss!
