Deep Breathing

  • Our breath regulates our central nervous system and can quickly bring our bodies down from fight-or-flight response. Kids move fast, their minds are often spinning and body is racing. Teaching kids how to take a deep breath and relax, using the power of breath, is incredibly helpful. Not only is the tool always available, it’s quick to provide a sense of relief. The more we practice deep breathing with our kids in moments of calm, the more it helps them in moments of chaos.

    Gratitude

  • Cultivating a sense of gratitude for the gifts in our life changes everything. When we give appreciation for the moments that bring us joy and fulfillment each day, our lives shift for the positive. I love incorporating gratitude at the dinner table. Simply have each person share 1-2 things they’re grateful, and watch how it can unite everyone, while learning what brings joy in each person’s daily life. It’s a lovely conversation starter, and an effective way to teach our kids the meaning of gratitude and appreciation.

    Disconnecting

  • Establishing healthy boundaries with technology is extremely beneficial for our overall health at all ages. Having intentional time without devices is incredibly important, and frankly challenging to do. I highly recommend finding a set time in the day to set technology aside for everyone, kids and adults alike. This can be as simple as no devices at the dinner table, or turning off all screens an hour before bedtime. Having time to play and interact without the distraction of technology, even for 30 minutes, will help everyone connect in a more impactful way. I highly encourage helping kids learn the power of disconnecting, and setting healthy boundaries with technology from a young age.

I hope these tips have shown you that mindfulness practices can be simple and effective, and most of all they apply to all ages! If you’re curious to learn more, visit the curated resources page focused on mindfulness techniques for the whole family.
