What is holistic nutrition and why should I care?
The wellness industry is constantly abuzz with new terms & concepts that are sure to change our lives for the better. It’s overwhelming to try to navigate the world of nutrition, let alone try to figure out what information is the best fit for you. This challenge is the very reason I set out to create my own company. I love the world of health & wellness, but it’s complicated and ever-changing. Why can’t this the idea of living a healthy life be made simpler & more attainable, and therefore do-able in everyone’s life? If I have any influence on it, it will become synthesized to work for you, and you’ll be able to feel like the best version of yourself!
Now you may be asking why I use the term holistic nutrition? The definition of the word holistic is “comprehension of the parts of something as intimately interconnected and explicable only by reference to the whole.” I view nutrition as a holistic process, many components coming together to paint a picture of our overall wellbeing. Understanding that nutrition isn’t a single path, but instead a series of intertwined paths, is the most important initial step into creating true health & wellness in our lives. Nourishment is an important & valuable piece of the puzzle, but it’s not the end all be all.
The other obvious part of health is exercise, and how you incorporate movement into your routine. Movement is key in our lives, and enjoyment of the process is equally important. If we enjoy what we’re doing, we’re exponentially more likely to make it a priority in our lives. We all live busy lives, but moving our body, even for 10 minutes a day can have a positive effect on our overall health.
Have you ever considered how your social engagements impact your health? Our ability to live our best life isn’t limited to the elements of movement and nutrition. While these are a large part of the puzzle, our relationships are key in helping us flourish. We can eat bundles of kale and workout every day of the week, but if our hearts aren’t fulfilled by the relationships we surround ourselves with, we’ll be left feeling incomplete. There are many areas of social connection in our lives, from our partner, friendships, extended family, work colleagues, volunteer organizations, community involvement and more.
Another area I find to be one of the most often overlooked, but most impactful on our health is the area of mindfulness. Stillness, focusing inward and simply breathing. The most simplistic of steps can be the most challenging to embrace and sustain. Every day new research emerges to support the benefits of meditation and breath work. My goal is to help spread the belief that mental exercise is as valuable for our performance and health as physical exercise.
My hope is that I have clarified the meaning of holistic nutrition, and given you initial insights into my approach to health & wellness. If you look at your health picture holistically, your experience in feeling your best will be that much more impactful. I’d encourage you to take time to consider these different areas of health: nourishment, movement, social connections & mindfulness. Where do you currently feel strong & thriving, and where could you benefit from encouragement & guidance? I’d love to hear your thoughts & feedback! Please comment below to start the conversation.
